This issue isnt about musicians needing to be taken by the hand and led or our procrastination (and frankly I find the whole cast of this article condescending, insulting to working musicians as well as being misleading) - its about the sad fact that the ECMAs are so far removed from our realm that we have no vested interest in them, they are not relevant. Add to that the fact that if you want to submit your work - yes maybe you can submit without paying the membership fees, but if you want to put your album in for a couple of awards there is a fee of $40 per category... once you are accepted, its $200 for a band membership in ECMAs (or you could pay your $150 band membership in MusicNL if you havent already and get a $50 discount). Not to mention - in order to submit for an award or show case you now have to read a (ridiculous) 22 PAGE MANUAL??? WTF? Most musicians dont have $500 to fling around - to an organization that only appears once a year to make a big money grab off the backs of working musicians, no less. Last ECMAs all the showcasing artists were required to sign a contract guaranteeing they wouldnt play any NoCases or any other event during the ECMAs - demonstrating just how far out of touch (and just how unsupportive) the ECMAs are of the communities they come into. The reason Newfoundland and Labrador musicians have not done so well in past is because ECMA is a member based organization with the majority of members in Nova Scotia - people tend to vote for those that they know. Its not because NL musicians have been somehow lazy or not done enough submitting. Its because the ECMAs do not represent most of us. And to all my musician friends... this article is full of so much bullshit.. Take for example this paragraph With more than 1,200 music industry professionals from around the world in attendance at this year’s ECMAs — resulting in four international booking agent signings, two Canadian agent signings, 224 confirmed shows, 81 international tours as well as film and television music placement licensing deals, publicity contracts and festival performance bookings — ... the benefits of playing an ECMA stage or being nominated for an award are numerous. These sentences do not even make any sense - it is literally just flying bullshit ...
