This just in from Joanne LaCourse. The doctors are trying everything, but Dave continues to spiral downwards. The primary problem is no longer pneumonia (infection). Instead, the problem is increasingly scarred alveoli walls. This is the part of the lungs where oxygen is transferred from the lungs to the blood. The scarring is worsening because of the 100% oxygen from the ventilator, plus Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. (ARDS is an inflammatory response to the pneumonia, even though the pneumonia is going away.) The result is that his lungs are becoming less and less effective at getting oxygen into his body. Nevetheless, the doctors are still pushing 100% ahead, hoping for a miracle. They just added a steroid to his medications, in hopes of overcoming the ARDS. If he has not improved by Wednesday, he has zero chance of recovery. In that case, his daughters & I have agreed that he would not have wanted to linger, and we will let them take him off life support (except comfort medications) and let him die a natural death. He would likely pass within an hour. Please keep praying for a miracle.
