This landlocked country in the heart of South America said yes to legal rights for Mother Nature and no to REDD+ and carbon markets. It is also saying goodbye to its forests, at an ever-faster rate. Bolivia is struggling to preserve its tropical forests against agricultural expansion, fueled by the country’s visions of food sovereignty—all while it seeks viable non-market alternatives to REDD+ on the international scene. Can it do all of the above? A new CIFOR study looks at the country’s unique situation.
