This life is a fight to the finish. Have you ever felt like the bows in your arsenal are broken? You thought you were a mighty warrior, but the intensity and power of the continuing battle have left you feeling overcome and depleted. The results you hoped God would bring by now … seem a distant dream. The storm rages on around you and the bankruptcy of your soul causes you to go to your knees again and again. In the book of Samuel, Hannah was at the end of her strength. Life had not turned out as she had hoped. She was barren and there seemed no change in sight. The Lord had closed her womb. Devastation. Her enemy mocked her and out of her great anguish and grief she poured out her heart to the God she knew could answer her prayer. Those around her misunderstood her sorrow even accusing her of being drunk. Pain has a way of making us so focused on the ache that we become unaware of the perception of others. They do not understand. It is our pain, not theirs. Her bow was broken. The mighty warrior now lay empty and despondent. Eli the priest prayed one small prayer…one sentence. “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” She lifted her face…nothing had changed, but she knew “there is no Rock like our Rock… The Most High will thunder from heaven…” The God who sees the broken hearted saw her plight and turned her situation upside down. That’s what God does. She was blessed with a child. Victory came. “My mouth boasts over my enemies….” She wrote one of the most amazing prayers of praise known in the Bible…even David would wish he had penned such extravagant worship. As a warrior in this life she had known despair, but wrote in 1 Samuel 2: 4 “The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength. It is not in our own time, schemes or strength that God will move…He is God. He will do it His way. But when our bows are broken, He arms us with power. We will overcome. She continued…“The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor…He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness…It is not by strength that one prevails; those who oppose the LORD will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven…”
