This little gal came to my backyard this summer. Then when she didnt leave in late October we began to wonder why. After contacting some local experts we found out that she is a Rufous hummingbird. Im sure most of you in this group are aware of this bird and how rare they are to Kentucky but my wife and I werent. We are what I would call passive bird watchers. She is still here and this morning the temperature was 12 degrees. I have rigged up a light with a built in windbreak to keep her water from freezing. The light is thermostatically controlled so it will come on when the temperature reaches a low of 30 degrees. We also raised the sugar content per recommendation of someone who has had one of these hummingbirds winter at their home. All this said we believe she is here for the winter. Not all of the posted pictures were taken by me. You can see the snow in the background in two of the pictures something you dont commonly see when taking pictures of a hummingbird.
