This little momma has had quite the journey already... She came to the shelter on 6/18, her babies were showing signs of upper respiratory and she was fiercely protective of them. She was then bumped to 4 different fosters because they couldnt handle her much less the babies without a very upset girl. She was doing her job but she was certainly not a beginner mom dog. We received the call on tues about her plight and said we would take. When I arrived, she charged the gate, snarling, snapping and throwing the biggest tantrum she could muster trying to keep her babies safe. She was so obviously terrified and doing what any mom would do. I laid next to her cage, on the gross ground, with her still circling and barking and raising hell, didnt look at her, didnt acknowledge, just calmly sat and gave her some time. Soon she was sniffing and then she was laid out against me letting me stroke her ears and face and giving me her belly. Now Im no Zen-K9 NYC - FL but the majority of the aggressive shelter dogs go just like this. Patience and a bit of time gains trust. The shelter is a terrifying environment. From there, I opened up the cage and she was my best bud, rode in my lap, checked on her 4 boxes of babies and slept so peacefully (oh and did the biggest potty ever, shes most certainly trained). She was not so content with foster dad. Well 4 days later and she is a new girl. Calm, dog savvy people can handle her babies and she CRAVES attention. She gave me hugs and kisses, demanded pets from ruth, and shared her babies with everyone. No stink eye, no protection, just a happy content mom. Amazing what a little patience and calm energy will do! How lucky are we to have a dedicated foster dad who was willing to put in the time and work. Mom will make someone an incredible addition. Shes so kind and sweet :)
