This little video demonstrates the use of clicker training (reward training) vs. shock collar training (punishment training) on a couple of people volunteers. In our classes we played a game (similar to the first half of this video) of trying to get each of us to do something, like moving toward a table and picking up an object, by communicating to each other using only the sound of the clicker. Each time we clicked it meant that we were doing something that would take us to the end goal. The click was the only communication we used. It was a fun exercise in class and it was quite amazing how quickly we all caught on to what, where and how we were suppose to do something that was expected of us by using only the sound of the click, which meant, yes, youre going in the right direction or doing something, like bending over, sitting, or turning, the way we wanted it done to reach the final goal. This is called shaping in trainer lingo. No one was hurt, we had a lot of fun, and we laughed a lot throughout the exercise! The second half of this video shows how this fellow feels and reacts when he gets a little shock to the arm each time he moves the wrong way or heads in the wrong direction. He didnt have fun and only ended up stressed and afraid to move in any direction, and, ultimately, became unwilling to try to get to the end goal. The second half is actually quite funny, but, not so funny when used on an animal that has absolutely no idea of why its getting hurt!
