This month Im taking a look at Creepy #42, a landmark edition of Creepy for a several reasons, first, this editon has the very first Creepy cover by superstar Warren cover artist Manuel Sanjulian, this cover is still one of my favorite Sanjulian pieces, right up there with the cover of Eerie #41. Creepy #42 also marks the entry of S.I. artists Auraleon and Jorge Galvez. Auraleon ends up having a very long run with the magazine. Also, notable is the very rare Loathesome Lore story page by Ken Kelly, one of only two interior pieces he ever did for Warren. The first story is The Quaking Horror by the aforementioned Auraleon, whos scratchy style never appealed to me personally, though his work was adored by many. Second up is some fantastic pencil art on A Change of Identity! by Dave Cockrum, who illustrates a great classic tale of werewolves, vampires and zombies. Third is The Amazing Money-Making Wallet with some truly amazing art by Joe Staton on his last story for Warren. Fourth is Spacial Delivery with by Larry Todd, whos unique art style was always a real treat, again his last Warren work. Fifth is A Chronicle! by Jorge Galvez, another S.I. artist who also makes his Warren debut here. Galvez did only a limited number of stories for Warren and his work was some of the best from the studio, I wish Warren had used him as frequently as they did his lesser contemporaries like Felix Mas and Auraleon. Sixth is Escape From Nowhere World, the sequel to the Warren Award winning, On the Wings of a Bird drawn by Jerry Grandenetti. Though I loved the first story, the second falls far short, IMHO, but still a notable moment in Warren history. Last is Ice Wolf with great story & art by Gary Kaufman in his final Warren appearance. Kaufmans Jeff Jones-inspired style was always something to look forward to. In this issue, we see some of the S.I. artists first entering the picture, as they begin edging out the Fandom artists over the next few editions until their presence is virtually eliminated from the Warren books altogether, a very sad thing indeed. But in Creepy #42 we are able to enjoy some of the last Warren work from fandom greats like Cockrum, Staton, Kelly, Todd and Kaufman as the great fandom artist era of Warren draws to a close after an all-to-short run of about two years.
