This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month so as a breast cancer - TopicsExpress

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness month so as a breast cancer survivor myself I thought it would be an appropriate time to share my story. When you find out you have breast cancer you’re never prepared to get the news and of course, everyone’s experience is different. For me - I’d already had quite a challenging year because mom had been sick since January and had recently been diagnosed with cancer herself, so when I got the call from my doctor in May of 2013 that I had invasive breast cancer I’m sure you can imagine that it was a bit surreal. I didn’t cry when I heard the news though. I actually had a peace - a calm and thought, “I’m okay, regardless of how this turns out.” I believe this peace could have only come from my faith in God. During that time I had been working out regularly and following a healthy diet. Although I believed my faith would carry me through a time that was certain to be full of fear and worry I felt, without anyone telling me, that continuing on my path to health and fitness would help me not only physically but mentally as well. I was thrilled when my surgeon told me that although I would have to make some modifications after my surgery, continuing on my fitness journey wouldn’t be a problem. Since then I’ve learned that not only is regular exercise an important part of being as healthy as you can be but more and more research is showing that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back (recurrence) if youve been diagnosed, as well as reducing the risk of developing breast cancer if you’ve never been diagnosed. It can also improve physical functioning, quality of life, and cancer-related fatigue post breast cancer treatment. Additionally, there is evidence that exercise can help breast cancer survivors live longer and lead a more active life. I support the cure - not only financially - for everyone that’s had, has or will have breast cancer but physically - for me and for my family. I encourage you to do the same. Support the cure financially but also do all you can do for YOU to prevent this dreaded disease that attacks so many. Whether you participate in one of my virtual challenges or you find another form of exercise and proper nutrition plan that works for you, I encourage you to take care of you!
