This month is Poverty Awareness Month. During the months of January and February, when many of us are facing cold and severe winter weather, let us remember particularly our brothers and sisters living in poverty. As I have said before, ignoring the needs of the poor among us is the surest way to dig a chasm of heartlessness between ourselves and God, and ourselves and our neighbors. It is important for us to do all we can to help those in need. The following reflection via United States Conference of Catholic Bishops from Catholic Social Teaching is a good reminder of our obligations as a Church, A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.
