This month, my daughter Fatima will celebrate (well not really celebrate it in the traditional sense), As far as which day it is, it really is not necessary to give out pertinent information on the internet. (I believe that is personal info that shouldnt be advertised along with real names, addresses, etc.). . When I think of my daughter Fatima, I stand a little straighter, lift my head a little higher, and my heart feels like a feather in my chest. When people tell me that my eyes are shining a little brighter than usual, and my skin is glowing, it is because Fatima is my daughter. . She was only 16 at the time that she was married. It was not uncommon THEN, for girls to be married at an early age. A year later, (1988) I happened to call my sister Khitam (she is my daughter’s sister-in-law) and told her that I had called Fatima, but she was not at home. They lived in Ohio at the time. Anyway, she told me a bit of news about my daughter that I did not know. Khitam said: “Guess what Fatima wants to do…..she wants to wear hijab, but she said she doesn’t know what you (me) are going to think about that idea.” . IMAGINE HER BEING CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT I WOULD THINK ABOUT THE HIJAB? The ironic part of this whole story is that nobody knew that I had worn the scarf 2 weeks earlier here in New York. It was as if my daughter, Fatima, read my mind and DECIDED FOR HERSELF TO WEAR IT AT THE SAME TIME---What a coincidence--SUBHAAN ALLAH. . Then after having her children, she made a sacrifice in taking them to the blaad to live, to teach them the language and the culture, and building a home there single-handedly (on her own), while her husband remained in America. Then after she and her kids returned back to America, she pursued her dream of going back to school and getting her RN nursing degree, and graduated with honors, then went on to receive her DOCTORATE degree in Psychiatry. She proved that it is never too late to pursue a desire. . I like to think that she has been the role model (qidwa) for her daughters--Hesen and Hidaya, (Allah yirdha 3alayhin) who also wore the hijab at a very young age, masha’Allah. Dr. Fatima has been and will always be a diamond among ordinary stones. I am very proud of her for so many things. The achievements she’s made despite the obstacles that stood in her way never cease to amaze me. . Happy Birthday habeebti, may you enjoy 100 more years in happiness, success in whatever you do, and in wonderful health, insha’Allah. More importantly, you have succeeded and maintained your values and your DEEN, and most of all, your allegiance to Allah. . May the rewards from Allah for your efforts be much greater than those that anyone can hope for in this Dunya. The greatest du3a that any parent can make for his/ her child is Allah yirdha 3alayk. So ALLAH YIRDHA 3ALAYKI, fid Dunya wil Aakhira. If I had to list the blessings in my life, one of those at the top of the list would be having a daughter named Dr. Fatima. I love you so much
