This month we commemorate the outbreak of WWI. Whilst exploring the role of animals in the conflict the most unexpected discovery was a flock of sheep at the White House. President Woodrow Wilson introduced them to save on manpower. An auction of the sheeps wool raised over $52,000 dollars for the Red Cross so they definitely can be said to have done their bit towards the war effort. At Anns Villa our lawnmower gang has been in operation for nine years. The gang started with one pregnant Dorper sheep,Wesley Watson. Today there are about 30 of her descendants keeping the lawns under control. Sheep Rule. Photo credits: White House c 1918 from the Library of Congress. Anns Villa by Obie Oberholzer 2013
