This months Literary Lunch discussion was on Holly Goldberg Sloans Counting by 7s, the story of Willow Chance, a 12-year-old genius who knows she is different (as in strange). She has a love of plants, medical conditions, and the number seven that, along with her IQ, sets her apart from her peers. But as she prepares to begin middle school in a brand new district, she is hopeful that she will manage to make at least one friend. Until disaster strikes, and she forgets to hope for anything at all. Opinions were very divided on this book, but all agreed it was a thought-provoking read. The colorful array of characters Willow meets throughout this turbulent year will stay with you, as will the fact that the smallest acts can prompt the most amazing changes.
