This monument is made out of a grey metal material, this type was fashionable in the late 1800s and early 1900s and thought to be more durable than stone. There are many of this type of monuments scattered through out upstate New York. Moss doesnt grow on it and the inscription doesnt erode away like it does on stone materials. The top is hollow with panels inscribed and screwed into place. Local lore has it that bootleggers used these hollow monuments to stash their moonshine during prohibition.
