This morning, 1/31/14, at around 1:30AM, units responded to a barn fire in the 2100 block of Union Church Road. Unfortunately, 18 horses were killed in the fire. The state fire marshal is on scene. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. A representative of the Department of Agriculture is also responding. We will not speculate as to the cause of the fire. The scene of the fire is on private property, and access is being controlled by Deputies. Only those directly involved in the investigation are being allowed into the scene. The property owners and the individual owners of the horses are all being cooperative and are assisting with the investigation as needed. We respectfully defer any questions regarding the actual response to the active fire to Oconee County Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Ken Parsons. Per OCFR, the barn was fully engulfed upon their arrival.
