This morning I answered some fantastic questions about engagement from a moms email and I thought Id pop on here to share my explanations from my book Teach Me To Play WITH You: Parents with a child with social and language difficulties must go out of their way to engage that child in play and during every day routines. I’ve used the word “engaged” several times without explaining it, so let me do that in case this is a new term for you. Engagement means that your child is totally involved with what you’re both doing and saying. He exhibits joint attention, meaning that he is focused on the object you’re talking about and you. He looks back and forth between the toy and your face. He hangs on your every word... If youre parenting a child with difficulties consistently connecting with others or if you work with toddlers and preschoolers with these challenges, grab your own copy of this resource today! The ideas will get you headed in the right direction for treatment, I promise : )
