This morning I had breakfast with a friend of mine, who is a very talented and respected orthopedic surgeon. He told me that he is quitting Medicare. My first silent reaction was that I never realized what an ass my friend was. That a person like myself had such a visceral initial reaction shows how warped we have become. I dont know if he is gouging and neither does he or anyone else–there is not, and has not been for decades, a free market to test his prices in. And then the ironies of ironies struck me – Medicare is being made into a substandard pre-paid medical services program, hurting the people who most need it and have paid into it all their lives, while the government is outlawing “substandard” catastrophic medical insurance, which was the only true medical insurance left standing, and is the option which makes the most economic sense for most younger working Americans. Its insane.
