This morning I had the absolute pleasure of completing yet another project (with a looming deadline overhead) in my mission to clear these book reviews, encyclopedia entries, and other publication projects off my desk. Today, I completed and submitted my book review of Ralina Josephs Transcending Blackness: From the New Millennium Mulatta to the Exceptional Multiracial and look forward to its future publication in Media International Australia. This work, which I referenced in an earlier article for Critical Insights: Mid-20th Century Women Writers, is a well-researched examination of America, not as a post-racial society, but as a society whose popular culture is fertile ground for probing twenty-first century multiraciality. As Joseph contends, mixture is not a panacea for racial problems; rather, representations of mixture provide us with a lens into existing racial tensions--a fact all the more evident when we truly begin to look at this concept of transcending blackness as a problematic concept built upon the age old belief of blackness as a perpetual deficit (170).
