This morning I was sent an E mail by a good friend of mine asking me to "like" Saint Augustine which is sponsored by the Saint Augustine Historical Society. Saint Augustine has been claiming that they are the first and oldest city in the Americas, by the way the date of their founding was 1565. This is what I wrote back to my good friend: Hi Crystal: Regarding Liking Old Saint Augustine History: Most people and historians agree that Columbus "discovered America." Schools do too because that is what they teach in their history books. When in fact he discovered the Caribbean islands. He was lost trying to find a trade route to Asia. In any case, Historians say in error that he discovered Puerto Rico when in fact he just looked at it from his ship. He never set foot on that island to claim it for the king of Spain. However, Juan Ponce de Leon founded and populated Isla de San Juan de Puerto Rico. He helped to found the first Catholic church in the Americas, as well as built the first fortress in the Americas as well, known as el Morro. If Columbus discovered America which was in Fact the Caribbean Islands of Cuba and the Isla Espanola, then you have to admit that it was Juan Ponce de Leon who founded the oldest city in America, Isla de San Juan de Puerto Rico, by the way, the date was 1508. Isla de San Juan de Puerto Rico is 57 years older than San Agustin. Then it stands to reason that San Agustin has no rightful claim in promoting itself as the oldest city in the Americas. Correcting history is quite difficult when the establishment says otherwise in error. Respectfully, John J. Browne Ayes.
