This morning in St. Petersburg, I hoisted my bike on the city bus - TopicsExpress

This morning in St. Petersburg, I hoisted my bike on the city bus to avoid riding for miles along a busy highway on the way to the Gulf beaches. Along the way, a male passenger got on and seated himself in the back. Soon the bus driver shouts out to this man Are you going to Michigan again this year? and an impromptu conversation occurs involving all the passengers. The man responds he was thinking of going to Traverse City, a place where he once worked in a cherry processing plant, but he wasnt sure if he could go this time because airplanes and hotel rooms cost money and I aint a rich man. He then gave us all a big toothless grin. Two other fellows (one also toothless) were on their way to open the tourist shop where they worked. They talked about a woman on yesterdays bus who was complaining about the temperature of the bus and the fact that it was a few minutes late. They wondered out loud why people cant focus on the positive things in life and instead choose to dwell on the negative. I relish the warmth and genuineness of these local folks. These little slices of humanity serve to lift the human spirit more than I can remember from other cities in which I have worked.
