This morning in your Navy was a classic. A couple of months ago - TopicsExpress

This morning in your Navy was a classic. A couple of months ago my duty station had some fairly senior folks fail the Navy’s semi-annual Physical Fitness Test which includes the following elements: (1) Don’t be fat. (2) Do a certain number of push-ups and sit-ups according to your age. (3) Run a mile and a half in a certain amount of time according to your age. In my case the maximum time allowed is VERY generous and the weight I’m allowed to carry is VERY generous and the standards are well publicized but people fail it nonetheless because people are people and this requires actual effort; more effort for some than others and it gets much harder the older you get – trust me. That being said – the standard is the standard and whining about it simply makes you a whiner. Our Chief of Staff went ballistic when he saw the test results (as he should) and implemented a fairly ambitious command fitness program whereby we line up boot-camp style and exercise in a military manner, much to the consternation of some folks. Such an event occurred this morning and a good time was had by all as a bunch of old sailors grunted and sweated through their required Navy workout. This was then followed by a monthly social-event called “coffee call” where one of our staff-codes sets up coffee and whatever munchies they’re inclined to offer. This morning’s coffee call consisted of 800 calorie éclairs and doughnuts coupled with scrambled eggs, cheese, sausage etc. designed to offset the deleterious effects of burning 200-400 calories in a moderately ambitious workout. Any danger of sailors starting to look like waif models has been averted one more time. If we want sailors to lose any weight at all, we might want to look into our first exercise being “push-aways” or “drop the doughnut and back-away”….just sayin’. Happy Weekend ;)
