This morning the verdict will be handed to POWs Aaron Francis and Junior Breau. Just to show you how biased the media has been, when they report on this case they absolutely have to show pics of police cars burning. These men were arrested long before any police car burning started...yet these are the kinds of criminal associations the police are trying to make. Who is supporting these warriors? They were on the front standing up for....for everything righteous- touching upon issues of health, protection, freedom, rights, honouring treaties...for natives and non-natives. Not only that, they managed to remain non-violent despite provocation and were part of progressive diplomatic action....an inspiration for all...truly groundbreaking... but they were betrayed. In the USA we say I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy. This creed has been there even before independence...no one knows the true origin.... All we know is that during the French and Indian war around 1756, Rodgers Rangers were using a combination of British and native (most likely Haudenosaunee) battle tactics, and this creed emerged. I think it had to do with preventing comrades (native and non-native) from being scalped or taken as trophies...this would have embarrassed and shamed all the ranger, not just the captured ones. Not leaving soldiers behind is one of the many great things white folks learned from interactions with natives. Our democracies were also shaped by these interactions. As mere colonists our forefathers were helpless. They learned how to fight and they learned how to unite in this hemisphere, starting on the east coast. They were transformed. When Mikmaq in New brunswick stood up against SWN to protect the earth, to honour treaties, and exercise their rights, they did it in a way that taught all of us. It was reported that mainly women stood up first, along with their fire keepers...they brought singing, drumming, and smudging. Pictures of pregnant and elderly women being beaten and arrested went viral. Then emerged the warriors societies and Chiefs. They brought together acadian and other non-native allies. They set up talks with Alward himself. They followed laws and ENFORCED treaty rights. They created a safe respectful atmosphere that extended to the online world. You know how hard it is to stay respectful over the internet??? They did it. They were tactical, clever, and friendly. They were successful. When have you heard something of this undertaking before? One recent example I can think of was when the Black Panthers and Hill Billies united for the protection of the poor and peoples rights. Today, Mikmaq and Non-natives unite for the protection of Mother Earth and Treaty rights. Diplomacy of this magnitude is rare in these times. This is history like none other.....this is a lesson that will impact our cultures for generations....and this is happening in New Brunswick...in a jail cell....right now. I really hope the warriors walk free today. NEVER FORGET. NO SOLDIER LEFT BEHIND.
