This morning, two seniors from Andrada Polytechnic High School, Morgan Gascho and Maria Obregon, were honored for their work this summer with the KEYS Bioscience program, sponsored by the University of Arizona. KEYS is summer research internship in which high school students work in bioscience laboratories at the University. Morgan and Marisa participated in authentic research, and presented their findings at the annual poster session. There were only 50 students from across that state accepted into this summer internship. Morgans research was to quantify how levels of arsenic in individual cells affects type 2 diabetes and Marisa studied how DNA cells are damaged and the level of toxicity that occurs to accelerate cell death. They each gave presentation and designed their posters themselves, with help from their mentors. Congratulations to these two young ladies, for not only representing Vail well but for forging the way for the newer generations interest in science. And congratulations to the parents and mentors that support these students in their efforts!
