This my friends, is what makes the Gospel message of Jesus so powerful, transformative and life altering: We have within these texts a hermeneutic, a way of seeing, if we will but place ourselves and our retributive paradigms on the cross with him. From this vantage point where we would seek retribution, we can simultaneously see another perspective, that of love in forgiveness. Here is where we are converted. This is what it means to be crucified with Christ. Only from this vantage point is it possible to see the way God sees. From this perspective we can begin to rethink Christian doctrine which is able to take in account the grand themes of the Bible and weaving a meta-narrative that is radically good news, a healing balm for the weary soul, vision for a blind intellect, food for the hungry heart (and according to The Boss, “Everybody’s got a hungry heart.”). Here is only the Love of the Abba, Son and Spirit. Here there is the seeking and finding of Shalom, the asking and receiving of Forgiveness, the knocking and opening of Hope. I have quoted Diana Butler-Bass before. Sometimes somebody just drills one out of the park, a la The Natural. I do believe she did with this word about ‘doctrine.’
