This new crisis in Iraq is moving at tremendous speed. Iran is now set to send troops into Iraq to prop up the Maliki government which consists primarily of the Shia Islam sect. Neighboring Iran is a Shia-state and will not allow Iraq to be overrun by the Sunni sect, which is a minority of the country. Al-Qaeda, and those on the march to Baghdad, are primarily a Sunni force. In addition to all these two divergent Islam factions, the Kurdish minority is a third dominant force in Iraq. All this points to the possibility, if not likelihood, of a major civil/sectarian war about to break out in the Middle East. The consequences of this troubling situation are about to unfold and none of them are good.
