This ones really interesting. Its not anti-shipping, as the headline might suggest. Shipping is 1000th as polluting per tonne of goods as air transport, but because 90% of everything transported comes by sea, even 1000th of the CO2 per tonne is a vast amount. In fact, 15 supersize container ships produce as much CO2, particulates and incompletely burnt hydrocarbons pollution as all the cars in the world. Thats not a reason to stop shipping, its relatively the most efficient way even in its current form, but its a huge area of room for improvement. Any small improvements to shipping engines, fuel mixes, etc. would have enormous positive impact because of the numbers involved.
