This only reinforces the need for our society as a whole to accept mental illness as the serious threat to health that it is and start taking more drastic steps to aiding those who suffer from it. There are many forms of mental illness, yet it is still a taboo subject that is often generalised and prioritised below physical health concerns, even though mental illness contributes to alarmingly high rates of violence and harm in our society at the moment. Im not saying that if the mental health unit had been open, that this case may not have occurred at all, however a death may have been prevented at least that night. Also whilst on the topic, what the hell is it with emergency wards with a longer line up and wait time then the gates to the MCG... I understand fully that our health system is constantly overwhelmed with the level of care required versus staff and funding: but seriously we shouldnt be driven, via ambulance, directly to the emergency room only to sit there for 5 hours waiting to be seen... Which is a common occurrence. But no of course, forcing a $7 GP co-payment in order to better fund medical research is a much better way to address the many failings of our hospitals and health systems in Australia. My thoughts go out to the family and especially to the young man who may never truly understand what he has done... :( another family torn apart.
