This past Sunday at VCtwenty, I shared that our community is going to be participating in a 10 day fast. In case you missed it, here are some of the main points: What is fasting? Fasting is traditionally thought of as a time of abstaining from something (usually food) in order to seek God. People throughout the Bible fasted, including Moses, David, Nehemiah, Esther, the early apostles, and Jesus. When we fast, we express physically our longing and our ache for Jesus and His Kingdom. To fast is to say, “I want You Jesus more than food. I long to hear Your voice and feel Your presence, more than I want food. And I want to see Your Kingdom come, in my community and in this city, more than I want food.” Why is VCtwenty specifically entering into this time of fasting? 1. God desires passionate followers. We must avoid the temptation to believe that we are going to grow in maturity as the years go by simply because we’ve known Jesus for a longer period of time. To grow in maturity as followers of Jesus, action must be involved. We need to be willing to pursue Jesus, taking risks and beginning new adventures. 2. There is no more effective means to receiving answered prayer from God than through a time of fasting. “Fasting can bring breakthroughs in the spiritual realm that will never happen in any other way. It is a means of grace and blessing that should not be neglected any longer. –Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline. Fasting is so powerful because it is one long continual prayer before the Father, and our God is a God who responds to the passionate prayers of His people. Fasting is not like waving a magical wand, forcing God to answer our prayers, but when we fast with the right motives and in line with the will of God, it brings breakthrough. 3. We are absolutely powerless without God. We have to determine what we really believe. Do we really believe that we can do nothing without God, or do we think that it all falls on us? Fasting is a confession that we are utterly reliant and in need of the help of God to do anything, including launching a campus that helps people come to know Jesus’ love. How can you participate? Beginning on Wednesday, January 7, we will be fasting for 10 days until January 16th. There are three different ways you can participate. 1. You can fast for 10 days without food, drinking juice a few times a day to keep your vitamin levels high. 2. You can fast for one meal a day for 10 days, praying during that missed mealtime. 3. You can fast from television and movies for 10 days, using the extra time you have to pray for God to use VCtwenty to be a blessing in Columbus. If you’re going to be participating in option #1, fasting for the full 10 days, please make sure you send us an email at [email protected]. We want to make sure we send you some literature to help you end your fast well. Please prayerfully consider joining our community fast from the 7th-16th. Over the next 10 days, we’ll be posting prayers that can help guide your prayer time each day on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We want VCtwenty to be a place that sees real life change occur as people meet Jesus for the first time, and we also want to be a blessing in this city, partnering with God to bring justice and love to many. Let’s be praying and fasting that God would help us make these dreams a reality! Love you guys, Christian
