This past Thursday, several of the pickers and singers at our agency gathered for the first lunchtime Guitar Pull we’ve had in over a year. The sessions were started several years back by one of our copywriters, Dr. Mark (where he got the name “Guitar Pull” is one of those little mysteries), and attracted enthusiastic musicians every time they were held. Then, sadly, as often happens in the advertising biz, Dr. Mark left for a different opportunity. In his absence, the idea of the sessions languished, but never died. In a busy environment, someone always has something to do, and though the musicians would talk about getting together, no one was able to take the reins and get the sessions rolling again. Then back in early October, Steve Hennisch, another copywriter and fellow guitarist, and I talked about it again one evening. We’d both missed the sessions and lamented the fact they’d gone dormant. As we talked, something clicked and I said, “Screw it, Steve, let me see if I can crank up some interest in doing another one.” I sent out a memo to the Known Suspects from previous times, urging them to get in touch with others of like mind. Interest was definitely there, but scheduling was an issue. Things finally came together at 1 PM on Thursday, the 6th. And it succeeded beyond expectations. It shouldn’t amaze that in a business built on creativity, many have side talents that their coworkers weren’t aware of – and that afternoon we had a chance to strut our stuff before our admiring friends and colleagues. It was a nice mix of styles and influences, from traditional folk to Springsteen. One of the reasons I love my job is that the culture here has room for things like this, encourages them, even (on Friday night, a meeting was held to plan the second annual agency film festival, with videos developed and produced by staff not necessarily involved in visual work). I’m planning for another Guitar Pull in December. Stay tuned!
