This past week I saw my good friend Richard Chacón, executive director of news content at WBUR, who told me the following after greeting me, “I have two words for you – Son Mayor.” Thanks to Richard, tonight on “¡Con Salsa!” I’ll feature tracks from the new CD by the Los Angeles based band Son Mayor - “Y Qué?” under the direction of Eddie Ortiz, featuring the Ortiz Brothers, Julian on bass, Alfred “El niño” on congas, George on timbales, Oscar on piano, and Johnny on percussion with a slamming horn section in addition to Saul Marambio and Juliana Muñoz on vocals. I’ll also feature music from the CD “Rumberos” by New York City based Son de Madre, led by bass player and vocalist Chacho (Gustavo) Schartz featuring Rolando De Los Reyes Cespedes and Willie Torres on vocals. In addition, a very special treat from Oakland, California - the talented young spoken word vocalist Rico Pabón. His new CD “Todo lo que Soy” (All That I Am) features some profound lyrics, and some well-known musicians from the San Francisco Bay area (John Santos, Anthony Blea, Wayne Wallace, and John Calloway) and Boston (his uncle Israel Pabón, and David Szebeda). This CD has been my soundtrack for the past week – I first shared his talent on the track “Que Sabroso” from John Santo’s latest CD “Filosofía Caribeña, Vol. II”. Tonight on “¡Con Salsa!” 10:00pm – 3:00am wbur90.9fm or worldwide on the web – wbur.org.
