This past week has been full, promising, and challenging. Having spent a few days with Jon, Erin, Willow and Judah, Tamar and Pia, I came home refreshed and relaxed. (The achilles tendon...or achilles-awfully-tender...continues to throb, but gam zeh yaavor, I pray.) The reception for Sam was promising; teaching the Intro to Talmud course continues to be exciting; teaching the Jewlicious Learners continues to be gratifying (especially when they give hugs and say they wish they could have JL all the time); teaching Melton continues to be stimulating; and doing Torah Study always is a highlight of the week. This Shabbat was designated as Legacy Shabbat and it was challenging to plant the seeds of contemplating what legacy members of our little holy community might leave for the future of this Jewish community. Was I able to get conversations started between husbands and wives? Were the singles in our congregation motivated to think about what they want their legacy to be? Its a challenge to me, but so important. I am so grateful to those who invested in this community (or to the Jewish communities of Chicago and Cleveland, from whence I came); without them I would not have had the privilege of the Jewish education I had, the ability to participate in and grow our family in the security of a strong Jewish community, and, now, the possibility of helping to establish a more viable Jewish community here in Las Vegas. Thankfully, my colleagues in the Board of Rabbis have also designated a Shabbat this month as Legacy Shabbat. May the seeds we plant grow and be fruitful for the sake of future generations. As was planted for us, so may we plant for the future.
