It was translated in Latin by Saint Hilary of Poitiers during the 4th century. It was then used as a morning prayer. The hymn begins with the words the angels use to celebrate and announce the birth of Christ to the shepherds according to the Gospel of Luke (2:14). This explains why the hymn is used at the Mass of Christmas Day. Vivaldi’s Gloria is divided in twelve movements.
