This piece should be of interest to anyone who lives in Mexico or who stays Im Mexico for any length of time. It concerns next of kin requirements of the Canadian Consulates in Mexico. Being a spouse or common-law partner does not matter. Having a plan in place with the Consulate if you or your spouse die DOES matter! American citizens only need to have a signed affidavit in place but again, having that is important. Here is the email I received from the Canadian Consul in PV: From: Date: November 7, 2014 at 10:38:29 AM GMT-7 To:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Todays End of Life Panel Hello Mr. Xxxxx Thank you for your email describing the unfortunate situation that you lived through last year with the passing of your partner. That is why I think it is important to participate in events such as the one organized earlier this week, to ensure that Canadians residents in the area understand the policies and procedures of the local authorities and of the Government of Canada (which are very similar to those of the United States). Should any fellow Canadians find themselves in a situation where they do not have next of kin, or are estranged from their family, please feel free to recommend that they meet with the Consular Agency to discuss these topics, so that we can work together to put in place a plan to ensure that they are complying with local regulations/laws. Thank you for your comments.
