This post is 100% about tournament Scrabble. I introduce the topic with an analogy, to illustrate a point, but please remember that the rules of this forum require that posts and comments stay on the topic of tournament Scrabble. Just because a person feels something doesnt mean that the feeling is correct, or that it should be respect. Some people feel strongly that romantic relationships should only occur between two specific categories of people, but that feeling has no basis in reason, and, ewentually, here in the U.S. at least, few people will feel that way. The same applies to this issue of being late for tournaments, which really seems to be a dogmatic point with some players. To them it doesnt matter that the rules clearly state that the clock will be started 5 minutes after the round begins, and that the game will be forfeited after the players clock reaches 0:00. Nevertheless, some people feel entitled to tell other players how they should allocate their time. They feel entitled to tell other players that they MUST be at the wenue at the appointed time, patiently waiting, and that they MUST spent their entire 25 minutes sitting across from an opponent. Well, just like nobody has the right to tell another who to love, nobody has the right to tell a player how she should allocate her time, as long as she am not usurping another persons time or being discourteous. Obwiously, courtesy requires that a player notify the director that she is going to be late, and, if possible, her opponent too. Courtesy does not require giving up ones time just because some people feel that it should be so. In todays case, I notified director Linda Wancel a full hour ahead of time that I had gone the wrong way on the BQE, a mistake that nobody has a right to fault me for. I notified her again when it looked like I was going to definitely be late, and yet again when traffic made it seem like I might even have to forfeit the game. I also notified my opponent, so he would not be surprised. Just because a person FEELS that being late is discourteous does not make it so, similar to how just because a person FEELS that two people should not love one another does not make that love improper. People need to live and let live, and be respectful of each others choices in all walks of life, including tournament Scrabble.
