This post is for fans of The House of God, a cult book of the 90s by Samuel Shem, who is a psychiatrist in real life. The book is based on the rivalry within the American medical profession between Jews and WASPS (White Anglo Saxon Protestants). Shems House of God is a medical teaching hospital set up by the Jewish community in response to their feeling that Jewish kids arent getting a fair shake for entry to the Best Medical School, which caters more to WASP kids. The ugly building on the left is the famous Mt Sinai Hospital, on the corner of 5th Avenue and 90th Street. It is definitely a House of God. The ugly building on the right is the St Luke-Roosevelt Medical Center, one of the Best Medical Schools, located just over the road from the St John the Divine Cathedral. In other words the two establishments are easy walking distance from each other. I am pleased to say that sectarianism in American medicine does appear to have eased off. For example, some of the most impressive presenters at the conference I have just finished are on the staff of Montefiore Hospital/ Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which is a huge Jewish community founded establishment in the Bronx, New York. From what one could tell, most of them, including the boss, are gentiles.
