This post was shared with me, and some of the comments under that original post were scary. Womyn, my sisters, were laughing at the over dramatics of another womyn who felt objectified and harassed by what is depicted in this short video. Some thought she should suck it up or appreciate the attention that was unwarranted. My sisters, we live in a world that uses us as it sees fit, and deters us from breaking that mold. Even watching the video makes me feel slimy and nauseous.. I remember those catcalls, I remember the touch on my back, his hand at my hip, some man walking uninvited, reaching for my hand. It is a journey I walked too many times, we face too many times. I cant believe we still have to convince our sisters and ourselves that we deserve the same privilege a man is born with, to be seen worthy of respect and dignify and humanness. Even in the streets. Even with a strut. It is dangerous to encourage that I appreciate strange men following me in unfamiliar streets, simply because they merit themselves worthy of my attention. When will we demand respect and safety from our brothers and all other males? Thank you Shannon Byrd-Crossley for posting, and all the womyn who responded, that remind me why these conversations are still necessary. Lets discuss.
