This question was asked to me in my inbox, from a guy from Canada about a comment I put on a news page... Youre a black man in America, and Im a white dude from Canada (grew up across the river from Detroit, Mich. though) so I was wondering how you feel about this statement: Racism still exists, but its not the cause of all the violence against black people. African Americans have an image problem more so than they do a race one. Being Canadian we dont have the same dynamic as you guys do in the states, but thats how I see whats been going on. Im in y thirties, and I was raised to be ultra sensitive about racial relations, and find it hard to believe that every white person out there doesnt have some of that imbedded in their brains. So why do we still see the issue arising? I think its because the majority of times we see black people on TV, movies, music, etc (there are exceptions of course) they are always portrayed as the criminal thug, drug dealer type. Now carry that thought into what we see on the news everyday (I grew up watching Detroit news so I know) and what the police get as a description over their radios (black male, white t-shirt in the case of Michael Brown). Does it not make sense to you that, of course everyone is going to associate them with criminals? This message sounds long winded I know... gotta make sure Im politically correct and shit. Wondering what your perspective is, seeing as you have a more personal understanding.
