This really happened to one of my students: A proud father wanted to photograph his daughters wedding. He went out and bought a new camera. He charged the batteries and tested it. The photos on the back of the camera looked great. The big day came and he shot from 5:00 a.m. To 2:00 a.m. When he got home it was then he realized that the camera card was never inserted into the camera. Some cameras will shoot without a card and show you a photo. Moral of the story, card and batteries are the bare necessities!
