This really needs to be promoted! Stephen Helmey shared Steve Spanglers photo: I took Spanish in college. It was taught using the classical method: learn to spell some words and start reading and translating. I cant speak Spanish to speak of. Then I quit college and joined the Army and a year after that I found myself in Germany. I got a book called German Made Simple that covered the basics. Then I started avoiding other Americans and promoting German contacts, with whom I insisted on speaking their language. A year later, I was fluent. Two years later, I was accepted at the ETH subsequent to an interview with the Director of Admission, which was conducted entirely in German. I still speak German today. I learned it as if I were a child.
