This review forced me to pull my copy of historian Robert Dalleks FLAWED GIANT: LYNDON JOHNSON AND HIS TIMES, 1961-1975 off the shelf. The story of the voting rights bill and the Johnson/King relationship on this issue is a complex one according to Dallek. I have not yet seen the movie, but Dallek argues that Johnson wanted to use other means to accomplish black voting rights because he did not think it possible to pass the measure in Congress. Johnson did not oppose black voting rights; he merely opposed pushing the measure before Congress at that particular time. Alabama state leadership, always their own worst enemies during the 1960s, rose to the occasion and produced such a show of violence in Selma, that they created ample political momentum that insured passage of the bill. I need to see the film, but the theater in Lexington seldom brings movies of this kind to town. I had to drive to Staunton to see LINCOLN.
