This scene is one of the greatest scenes Ive ever watched in a movie. Not because of the acting or directing or anything, its all pretty basic; but the logic behind the story told by Stanley Tucci. In less than 2 minutes he tells a story about a bridge he built above the Ohio river, to minimize driving time between two cities. Hes making rough calculations to imagine the time that this bridge has saved for the people of those 2 cities over 22 years. Hes talking about saving time for people .. Minimize the wasted time in driving between 2 places .. because obviously time is the most valuable resource a human being has! When I see people thinking that way, I compare it to what happens in Egypt. In Egypt roads are blocked for a parade or escort of someone important, roads are blocked in the most stupid ways for useless security checks. People are thrown into jail for years with no crime theyve done other than expressing their opinions. And I dont need to talk about people whose lives end by getting shot during a peaceful demonstration. Good people who could have made a difference in this country if they had more time in their lives. Thats one of the reasons why this country and its people suck. Below is the transcript of the scene ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ERIC: Do you know I built a bridge once? WILL: Sorry? ERIC: A bridge. WILL: No I didnt know that. ERIC: I was an engineer by trade. It went from Dilles Bottom, Ohio to Moundsville, West Virginia. It spans 912 feet above the Ohio river. 12,100 people use this thing a day. And it cut out 35 miles of extra driving each way between Wheeling and New Martinsville. That’s a combined 847,000 miles of driving, a day… or 25,410,000 miles a month and 304,920,000 miles a year .. saved. Now, I completed that project in 1986… thats 22 years ago. Over the life of that one bridge that’s 6 billion… 708 million… 240 thousand miles that haven’t had to be driven! At, what .. let’s say… 50 miles an hour? that’s 134,164,800 hours… or 559,020 days… so that one little bridge has saved the people of those two communities a combined 1,531 years of their lives not wasted in a car! 1,531 years!
