This segment in the Saturday Extra program on ABC RN on 30 Aug featured Richard Heydarian, Lecturer in political science and international relations at Ateneo De Manila University, Philippines who wrote a thick dense book entitled: How capitalism failed the Arab world: the economic roots and precarious future of hte Middle East uprisings. Descriptions of factors causing trouble: World Bank and the IMF (propagators of neoliberal policies); generation of crony capitalism (corruption of proper policy intent); gross inequality, threateningly high youth unemployment - powder keg; land reform or the lack of it; need for population management program; importance of manufacturing sector (but this is so difficult to deal with - manufacture what?).
