This segment of Discovery’s “North America” showcases a red fox pinpointing field mice buried deep beneath the snow, using his sensitive hearing and the magnetic field of the North Pole to plot his trajectory. It sounds very scientific, and it is, but watching the fox jump and dive into three feet of snow is pretty fun! The fox’s fluffy tail is used for balance, as a signal to other foxes, and as a nice built-in blanket in the cold weather. The red fox is an omnivorous species, and according to National Geographic, “Red foxes are solitary hunters who feed on rodents, rabbits, birds, and other small game — but their diet can be as flexible as their home habitat. Foxes will eat fruit and vegetables, fish, frogs, and even worms. If living among humans, foxes will opportunistically dine on garbage and pet food.” Watch the fox in this video exhibit their natural ability to find prey in the depths of winter, in a method that looks quite amusing, and appreciate that it is living out its life in peace (besides the camera-person, ha!). youtube/watch?v=D2SoGHFM18I#t=12
