Variation 21, a canon at the seventh is the complete opposite. It changes key and mood to melancholy G minor, its relatively slow and expressive. Variation 20 can be thought of as a toccata, Variation 21, an allemande. Variation 22 changes the musical mood once again, and is the first of a trio of rather upbeat, rhythmical - almost light-hearted variations in my view intentionally composed as such and placed side by side to intensify the impact of the appearance of arguably the most hauntingly expressive keyboard works of all time - Variation 25. Both Variations 21 and 22 were conceived for a single manual. In Variation 22 we clearly hear the ground bass line on which the whole set of variations is built and has 4 voices similar to a fugue. Ive rearranged the notation in these bars highlighted which I hope makes it easier to see which hands play which notes and added fingering suggestions. You can download a free PDF of my new edition of Bach Goldberg Variations for Piano from a link below. Ill run through Variations 20, 21 and 22 together then play Variations 21 and 22 at a slow tempo for those looking for fingering suggestions.
