This shit has got to end. I love teaching and I love meeting students over the past 5 years. I have enjoyed the journey, but it came at a high cost. I am extremely grateful that I was hired full time but I am acutely aware that I am an exception not a rule. I didnt write or speak publicly about our circumstances while Carl was so ill and we were living so close to the bone but we barely kept a roof over our head and we qualified under official definitions of food insecurity. Summer of 2012 was the worst. We spent 2 months living on potatoes, rarely eating more than 1 meal a day. In many ways it will be years before we dig from this hole. The prevailing thinking is that adjuncts have other income, but in the last 6 years that has been harder to pull off. And note that during this period Ive had to defer student loans, which are now over 200% of what I originally borrowed. There are many ways in which the educational system is breaking down in this country. The exploitation of contingent faculty is a major contributor.
