This should piss them off. William Mott William Mott 22 Ekstrom St. Dover, NJ 973 361-4195 BMott3fan@aol Dear Editors, In his inaugural address, Thomas Jefferson stated: Fellow Citizens--a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one other, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities. Im remind of this speech as I read the announcement by the town of Dover that they will be driving around town with its Spring Clean-Up Inspections. The code enforcement people will be issuing tickets on their inspections, with the maximum of $1500.00 and/or 90 days in jail if not abiding to their standards. Im thinking their standards will be much like that of Olympic Judges doing Figure Skating--Their judgement is subjective and depends largely on how much they like you and your political affiliations. Do I have to hire a tree company to come and get a plastic bag the wind put on the top of my tree? Oh, Look, a spot of rust on my railing; will I have to sand and paint it; in a color approved by the town? It seems like the town of Dover is becoming the men who are injuring others. H.L. Mencken said that Democracy is the theory of common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard. As many civic minded citizens of Dover have done in the past, I have voted in every election since I was eighteen, and I am worried that I am indeed going to get it good and hard; because maybe this spring the town will decide that it is only approving petunias in flowers pots and I had planted begonias. I guess the snow plowing job the town did after a major storm does not fall under this category. Dont get me wrong, the town workers did an above and beyond the call of duty job, but were hindered by all the cars parked in front of houses that no way should have that many people living in them. One drive into Salem Village, or any other street in Dover for that matter, would show you there are more cars than the amount of people that is allowed in one residence; Its right out there, everyone but the town knows. This last snow storm you couldnt drive safely down a street, much less a fire truck get through. A business near me puts out 6 large garbage cans filled with auto repair debris, and the Town Collector picks them up twice a week with no stickers on them. Where is the code enforcement? This businessman also plows in the fire hydrant at the bottom of my street, then goes home out of town while I worry if my house in Dover may burn down. The Town Garbage Collector has constantly thrown my girlfriends can into the middle of Palm St. in town for years and years. Finally, two weeks ago, a Limo, who are constantly are breaking traffic laws in town and are never pulled over, yet in Rockaway Township are ticketed for violations all the time, clobbered the can and destroyed it. Two weeks of constant e-mails and phone calls to town officials to complain went unanswered, yet she got a ticket two weeks after the snow storm for snow on her sidewalk that runs along Route 46 which was passable, that was never ticketed in the 50 plus years her family had owned the property. Coincidence? John Adams wrote - There is a danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty. After this letter to the editor, I have a feeling Im going to get a visit from a powerful little man with a ticket book, probably over my choice of flowers in my flower pots before I get a chance to move to Mine Hill after five generations in this house in Dover.
