This song consistently plays at the twenty-four hour gym that I joined this month, and the words Urgent ... urgent ... emergency get in my head, every time it plays. There is something powerful about that hook, and although songs like this are very popular among a certain segment of society, I personally never even heard Urgent by Foreigner until sometime last year. (Besides playing every day at the gym where I now work-out, the song has also been playing on Comfort Dental radio, which came into existence about a year ago, and plays every day at the office where I work.) Surely, this song has been broadcast all over the radio across my entire lifespan; the recording originated in the year 1981, and I was born two years later. Yet I never even noticed the existence of the song, until last year. That is an interesting potential question to research: what sociological factors influence our awareness of certain types of music, throughout the course of our lives? What makes us tune out certain kinds of music, or tune in to others, across the decades? And why did I suddenly start to notice music by Foreigner a year ago, when I turned thirty? I dont know. The answer is probably pretty depressing. Anyway, the swath of people in this world who think that bands like Journey and Foreigner produced the best music ever recorded -- and surely this is not as small a demographic group as one might first imagine -- are people who have been peripherally on my mind, for the last year. Why, they beg the question, is Foreigner one of the most commercially-successful bands of all time? Would we have called Foreigner the Kings of the 1980s, if Michael Jackson had never come onto MTV? And consider this: if there is one band that future generations will discover, from our time, will it be Foreigner? If so, what would that communicate to the future about the current state of our society? I dont know, but needless to say there are many other pressing questions running through my head, that I will not divulge at present, because the questions I have already posed are urgent questions that need answers. URGENTLY. . .
