This song is so personal and dear to me. My friends and family who had the opportunity to spend time with my Yaiya were just as lucky as me to have had her in my life. She was a nanny, a second mother, a friend and my familys adopted grandmother. I find it fascinating and wonderful that we were able to chose someone to be part of our family even though she was not a blood relative. I would run to her bedroom when I had nightmares, she would do my hair in braids in the morning, make me breakfast, dinner, you name it. Yaiya was the centre of our family. I dont know what we would have done without her. She lived with us for 30 years until we had to put her in a home. I left like a full circle had almost come to an end, which made me worry about losing her before she even left us. I would joke with her saying things like I need to preserve you, my Yaiya is never allowed to die. And she would laugh at me and hold my hand. A week before she died Yaiya said to me thank you for everything youve done for me, thank you. I love you. She needed to tell me because I think she knew she was close to her end. Her death hit me hard like an arrow through my heart. I felt like Id never be the same. Part of me didnt ever want to be the same because I felt like her loss should alter my world. I should never be the same without her. Her passing made me challenge the meaning of life and death. Questions like what happens when we die? Do our souls live on? Are we ever really dead if our souls and memories remain? These spiritual questions inspired my song Never Will Die, which states that we never die as long as our souls are alive. The song quickly became a tribute to my Yaiya. As a child I was a competitive figure skater and wanted to be an Olympic figure skater who skated to her own music. I had this insightful moment when I realized that its not too late to fulfill my childhood dream. I may not be at the Olympics, but I can still skate to my own music! Thus came the idea for this video, a dreamlike ice world occupied by none other than Sasquatch. A full circle relationship tribute and making my childhood dream come true all through one song. The power it has over me is unimaginable. This is Never Will Die. Dedicated to my Yaiya. This is a condensed version of my blog on my site.
