This song was recorded at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle by legendary engineer, Kearney Barton (who recorded The Kingsmen “Jolly Green Giant” of “Louie, Louie” fame, The Sonics “Psycho”, The Frantics “Werewolf”, and many others.) It was an 8 track analog studio, recorded onto 1 inch reel tape. This song was originally recorded completely live with no overdubs. I had an orchestra that I wanted to back up the song, which was within my budget at the time, but by the time I recorded this song, the words had no meaning anymore since she and I both moved on. I’m happy enough with the current recording, but, at the very least, I wish I had some backing vocals, since most of Roy Orbison songs had backing vocalists. Regardless, I kept this recording in the spirit of Orbison and I think the recording reflects that. At the very least, I recorded in my home studio some string sounds with a Kawai FS800. I had to give a fuller effect of what I was looking for in the song. To finish off this particular mix, I had to convert it from a cassette format onto the Audacity program on my computer with a JVC TD-W254 Double Cassette Deck 3 motor Silent Mechanism. The players were: Wayde Brown (me) guitar and lead vocal and keyboards, Nick Wilcox on bass, and Dan on drums. This is not the usual Dan Penland that performed with us but another drummer named Dan who sat in on only one session. Unfortunately, his last name escapes me and there are no notes stating who he was. I just know he learned the song within a couple takes and we recorded it. The 439TH song that I wrote is actually a true story. I knew a Nicole, and I originally titled this song as NICOLE (CAN YOU UNDERSTAND). But now, I changed the title, since I’ve written enough songs with female names in it, plus it throws off the idea that it’s about one person with the new title as CAN YOU UNDERSTAND, which, I feel flows better. This song was a total influence of Roy Orbison, who only passed away a short time when I wrote this. He was a big influence of mine as a child. So, with this particular song, I pay homage to the late, great Roy Orbison. I had to practice for hours just to be able to hit the high notes that this song required. Most songs that I wrote with female names, I never knew them. It was just a fantasy or something I made up, artistically. This Nicole, however, was a real person, one of a few ladies who broke my heart. But hey, we all have to have a few broken heart experiences if we’re to grow as people. So, this was a good learning lesson and a minor imprint of my past. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND WHEN I LOOKED INTO YOUR EYES, I SAW NOTHING BUT SORROW, FOR I WAS LONELY AND STARTED TO CRY. WOULD YOU LOVE ME TOMORROW? BLONDE HAIR THAT TOUCHES MY DREAMS! CAN YOU UNDERSTAND? BUT YOU’RE SO YOUNG AND IT SEEMS YOU’RE WITH ANOTHER MAN. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND? WILL YOU UNDERSTAND? I KNOW THAT I LOVE YOU. BUT HOW CAN I ASK YOU TO BE WITH ME? I’LL DO EVERYTHING THAT I CAN DO. CAN IT BE, I’M IN LOVE WITH YOU, NICOLE? I’LL SEND YOU ROSES FROM FAR AWAY TO SHOW YOU THAT I CARE. I NEED YOU WITH ME FOR EVERYDAY, TO RID MY LONELY DESPAIR. CAN YOU UNDERSTAND? HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND! NICOLE, NICOLE, NICOLE, NICOLE! Written and performed by Wayde K.
