This song was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL 47 years ago, the last week of January, 1967. Aretha had been recording for Columbia Records for six years, but decided not to renew her contract and signed with Atlantic Records earlier that month. Her producer, Jerry Wexler, wanted to get the FAME Studio feel that he heard on Wilson Picketts recordings. They traveled to Muscle Shoals, and this was the first song they recorded there. Wexler also wanted to feature Arethas gospel piano talent, so she played piano on this recording. Spooner Oldham moved over to the Rhodes electric piano. The first tries to come up with head charts for this song didnt work out well UNTIL Spooner found the choppy chord lick that turned the tide, and became the signature musical phrase in this song. There was a little spat between Arethas husband, Ted White, and one of the guys in the FAME horn section, that led to a bigger argument between White, Wexler and Rick Hall, the owner of FAME Studios. Aretha and her husband left town the next day. As it turned out, the rest of the album was recorded in New York City, but they imported the FAME studio players to finish up. This song was released as a single off this album in the spring of 67 and became Arethas first #1 hit single. Dan Penn and Chips Moman, who both were once studio musicians at FAME, had written a song for Aretha to include on this album.....Do Right Woman. When the single was released, Do Right Woman was on the B-side, and it also made it into the top 10 later that year. https://youtube/watch?v=pxb-9p5hdRY
